Caffeine Timing Cheat Sheet: When to Have Your Second Coffee

2 min readUpdated 2026-05-02

The short version

  • First coffee: 90 minutes after waking, not immediately.
  • Second coffee: 13:00-14:00, before the post-lunch dip starts, not after.
  • Cutoff: 6pm, full stop, unless you enjoy debugging your sleep at midnight.

Most caffeine crashes aren't caused by too much caffeine — they're caused by bad timing. This cheat sheet is the timing half of the equation: when to have it, not how much.

The second-coffee slot (13:00-14:00) is the one people get backwards most often — reaching for coffee once the post-lunch dip has already hit means you're using caffeine to climb out of a hole instead of avoiding it. Move it earlier in that window and the dip is smaller to begin with.

Questions people actually ask

Between 1pm and 2pm, ahead of the typical post-lunch energy dip rather than in reaction to it — waiting until you've already crashed means using caffeine to recover instead of to prevent the dip.
